Dear Margo,
You know what makes a good song…no a great song... is one
that takes you away. Away from your room in MN to memory, a place you have been
a million times, or a place you have only been in your dreams. They can take
you to a feeling or emotion. Where ever it is, a great song moves you from
point A to point B. There are so many songs that do that for me. My memory is
greatly attached to music and that probably why I love music, because every listen
is a trip (see I don't need drugs in my life). I have so so many that it’s
hard for me to even narrow them down but here are the ones that I really remember.
Kissing the Lipless- The Shins.
Now
this first one is kind of a cheat. This one is the first song of the album “Chutes
too narrow”. This whole album brings me back to last summer. It was much too
hard to pick just one because I honestly don’t know how many times I listened
to this album. Back and forth from Plymouth to Oakdale, going to baseball games
on a beautiful sunny day. Windows down (because of the no air condition) and hair
blowing everywhere. It was the soundtrack to the summer…and I love when it
brings be back there.
La Mer- Charles Trenet
Now how
does this song not bring you to the French seaside? And yes I know that we both
were only in France for…um basically 2hrs for a layover… but really we both
belong there. And we will both get there together. But if I ever need to take a
quick trip there I just turn on this song and I am there on the beach in the
sun getting ready to go sailing. I love many different covers of this song as
well as the English. It takes me there like that!
She’s got you high- Mumm ra
This song is one that I would hear a lot and think “oh yeah I
like this song…who's it by…oh yeah I have to remember this one…its good” and
then I’d forget it. But when I hear it takes me to a city, walking down the
sidewalk looking at all the cool stores. No particular city. Maybe Chicago,
LA, New York, London, or even Minneapolis…didn’t matter just took me there. It is not till recently that I realized that was in (500) days of Summer and that does
take place in a big city and the dudes an architect and that is probably a big reason
I make the association…my brain is a bit slow.
How it ends-DeVotchKa
This is one of the songs that it makes perfect sense why I think
of the plane ride between Paris and Rome because I was listening to it on the
plane ride…so pretty easy. I personally loved being on a plane…I thought it was awesome.
That 8hr plane ride to Paris was the first one I have ever been on…And I loved
it! It was long but pretty freaking awesome for me. I actually slept pretty
well (I guess most people didn’t). But the plane ride from Paris to Rome… I
adored it!! It was small and comfy, it was light out so I could see outside, and
the view was breath taking. This band has always make me think of Europe but
this just brings me back to that plane ride, which I oddly really really enjoyed…I
feel like that’s not normal…
The Rocky Road to Dublin –The Tossers
The songs actually brings me to two places, Dublin (duh) and
Harriet Island St. Paul (huh?). Well I have never been to Dublin, but it’s
another big goal, but I have been to Harriet Island MN many times for Irish
fair. I have gone with my family since I was young. But last year one of my favorite
Irish bands played and it rocked! I have to take you this year! It really is so
much fun! I love this song and it gives
me great memories and takes me to somewhere I dream about going to in the
future.
Annie waits- Ben folds
*clap* oh nostalgic! *clap* 6th and 7th
grade Ben folds was my JAM!! I pretty much listened to whatever my carpool
buddy and friend listened to but lucky for me she has excellent taste in music
because I still love this song. Of course it makes me think of Annie because …well it's her name, but really we listened to this song a lot. I think we might even
tried to make music video…oh yeah we made a lot of embarrassing videos…at the
time they were hilarious... probably not
so much anymore. But really if this was the music I listened to as a preteen then I am
pretty proud of myself! Thanks Annie M!
When I am 64- Beatles
Ok I don’t know how I have made it this far without a Beatles
song because honestly if it hadn't been for Annie I think they would been the
only band I would have ever listened too. Out of the hundreds of great, no fantastic,
no brilliant, no just absolutely wonderful songs, why did I pick this one? Well
my dear it’s because it reminds me of you! Because when we are old old ladies, when we have a grandkids and can’t hear anybody, we will get a cottage on the isle
of white. Just chatting and playing cards. And yes it’s a love-ish song but
really it’s about friends. Friends who love each other! I also picked it for my
one Beatles’s song because it’s really underrated! It’s a great love song! It’s very cute and it just makes my heart all warm and fuzzy!
La vie en rose- Louis Armstrong
Oh look I’m back in France but this time Paris! On a roof
top garden at night looking out over the river at the Eiffel tower, painting,
or reading, drinking wine with my friends, being held by the one I love, or
just soaking in Paris. I am sure I have romanticized Paris but who cares! It’s beautiful
and wonderful and it’s a place I can’t wait to be. Every time I hear the
wonderful trumpet blare out I am there. Right there with the people I love! Now
I had a tough choice, Louis or Edith…both are wonderful and I really enjoy the French
but something about that trumpet…I close my eyes and I am in Paris!
Stand by me- Ben e King
This is one of those songs that takes me not really to one
place but a time. Summer nights. How I love the summer, those warm nights doing
silly things, by a campfire, smoking cigars, talking late into the night! When
it starts I start to remember and by the time the strings come in I am there on
those warm summer nights with my friends and my family.
I have many more but here are a couple quick ones:
All these things that I've done- the Killers-My sister’s
wedding! Everybody was dancing, singing and having a fantastic time!
Anything by Frank Sinatra-Family dinners of spaghetti
Into the woods, Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables- The basement
of my childhood home acting them out, (I was red riding hood, Meg, and Cosset)
Little joy album-
road trips.
One final song that I would like to talk about is “Volare-
by Russell Watson” I love this song so much because it takes me to one of my
favorite places, Rome, but more specifically the Piazza Navona! That was one of
my favorite places! I just liked sitting there eating gelato or walking around
looking at the paintings by all the different artists. There a lot of songs
that bring me to Rome but this one in particular makes me feel the most Italian,
the most Roman, the most at home!
I'd love to hear what songs make you feel like you are somewhere
else!
Love Sofia!
